our story
how me met: he took a chance

On September 30, 2012 the Kaitlin's fire department hosted a fundraiser to support the Nassau County Operation Wounded Warriors. As with any fire department fundrasier, many in attendance were from local volunteer departments such as the one John is a member of. Kaitlin, being a member of the hosting department, spent the day volunteering at the event with her sorority sisters from TriDelta. It was the sorority's job to sell 50/50 chances at the event by walking around with the attendees. The sorority girls quickly noticed that the boys from East Rockaway were easy targets to sell their chance tickets to: one of them offered to buy a raffle if they got to take a group photo with the girls. Kaitlin noticed that this one boy (John) kept buying a ticket from her every single time she asked him. Kaitlin was down to her last ticket, and she knew just who would buy it from her. John was down to his last $5, and he replied that he would only buy Kaitlin's last ticket if she put HER phone number on the ticket. After a lot of joking around, and $80 of John's money later, Kaitlin finally gave John her phone number.
how we started dating: wait, you're serious?

the proposal: reaching milestones
On March 6, 2020 John followed in his father's footsteps, and graduated from the City University of New York Academy as a Peace Officer. Going through the academy John had become close with other Officers who would eventually help him plan one of the most important days of his (and Kaitlin's) life. After the graduation ceremony, everyone had gathered in the atrium of Fridamin Hall at Queens College. John had called Kaitlin over to where he was standing so they could take photos with each other. While they were taking their normal photos, a crowd started to surround them but Kaitlin didn't understand why. Little did she know that as they were having their photo taken, John's friends were walking out behind them wearing shirts that when put together (in the correct order) read "Will You Marry Me". After Kaitlin and John were done with their photos, Kaitlin's friend Ashley ran over to her to show her the photo she had taken (see above), and at the same moment she saw the photo Kaitlin had noticed the other officers lined up with their shirts. She looked back over at John, who was down on one knee. While down on one knee John looked at Kaitlin and said, "I've reach one milestone by graduating today. Let's reach another one. Will you marry me?" Speechless, Kaitlin nodded yes and with that Kaitlin and John were officially ENGAGED!
Whoever figured out that "it's a small world after all" is so very correct! After John and Kaitlin met it took some time for them to actually meet again. Kaitlin's firehouse was hosting a happy hour, and invited a bunch of people they knew from surrounding departments. Kaitlin was running late from work and got to the event late, but when she arrived she was more than surprised to see not only John sitting at the bar, but a bunch of members she knew from other departments, all of which who already knew each other. In the weeks that passed from that happy hour, John had invited Kaitlin to meet up with the same group from the happy hour a few times at the Dogwood Inn. John and Kaitlin started to grow closer, texting through out the day and making plans for when they both got home from work. On Wednesday, January 23, 2013, Kaitlin and John, along with a few friends, were heading back to Kaitlin's firehouse after grabbing dinner. When they walked into the firehouse, Kaitlin and John were the last two to walk in and John had grabbed Kaitlin's hand to stop her while the rest of their friends walked into the back room. John had asked Kaitlin to officially be his girlfriend, and in true "Kaitlin" fashion.... she thought he was kidding. She laughed, and when he didn't laugh she looked at him and said, "Wait, you're serious?"
